Emma came into this world blight-stained, afflicted by the blight from her birth. Apart from the fact that she was born in the colony, she has no knowledge of her origins, even her memories are lost to her. She has been tasked with keeping the colony safe from marauding malefacts and corrupted golems.
Emma possesses the special ability of being able to seal the blight of those she defeats within herself, turning their corruption into her strength.
There is a girl by Emma's side, someone only Emma can perceive.
Just like Emma, she has lost her memory and her true identity is unknown. She is, however, the only one Emma can talk to.
A pale malefact wandered into the forest on the outskirts of Ogouchi Colony, Emma's home.
When they made contact they became Entangled, allowing part of its memories to flow into Emma.
While it is a malefact, it bears its own mission.
The green section of the Entanglement Gauge is filled as Emma dodges and parries. Unleashing Blade Arts and blocking enemy attacks will consume this gauge.
Guarding with your sword instead of parrying will reduce Emma's Entanglement Gauge.
Guarding when the Entanglement Gauge is at 0 will cause Emma to stagger, making her vulnerable.
However, successfully parrying will replenish the Entanglement Gauge. Victory and defeat are no more than a blade's width apart.

The number of QTE completions depends on the skill being used.
Entangling with Koo has unlocked the Entanglement Overdrive ability.
By putting their bodies in a state of hyper-focus, both Emma and Koo can now slow down their perception of time. Entanglement Overdrive consumes the Entanglement Gauge, but may help you attack, dodge, and heal in a variety of situations.
Emma can extend her hair at will.
She can also jump to wherever her hair reaches.
Nushi and certain other enemies cannot be staggered, even if their stagger bar is filled, but they can be dazed for a short while.
Emma's Blade Arts inflict good damage on the enemy's stagger bar. Emma has acquired Blade Art: Shakuyaku, which can unleash thrusts at nimble enemies. Openings exist where a standard attack would be of no effect.
